The gorgeous City of Cape Town has so much to offer visitors and locals alike. While not every one can be mentioned, we’ve made the effort to present some of the most exciting and interesting ones for you, the holiday traveller, to check out:

Kloofing

kloofing01Better known as canyoning to the rest of the world, kloofing is an activity for the truly adventurous that usually means descending a watercourse or deep ravine that may be wet or dry, and requires a certain blend of skill, courage, adventurous spirit and definitely caution and common sense.

The activity of kloofing involves walking, scrambling, swimming, climbing, plunging, bum slides, jumping, and even abseiling. Part of what makes kloofing so exciting is the high jumps into pools from various heights and long abseils, going up as high as 20 metres or more, found in the hotspot of Suicide Gorge near Grabouw.

Kloofing can take from a few hours to multiple days to complete and some trails require participants to use specialised equipment such as ropes, wetsuit and rock climbing anchors among others. Since kloofing can prove to quite hazardous, it is always advised that anyone interested in trying it out should be careful and be accompanied by an experienced kloofer.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

stand-up-paddle-01While in Cape Town you’d probably be interested in going surfing at one of this region’s numerous surfing hotspots. But if you were up for surfing of a different kind to kite surfing, wind surfing and classic surfing, maybe you should check out stand up paddle boarding. Never heard of it? You’ll be surprised to hear that this practice dates back to ancient times in Polynesian history.

As the name implies, it involves standing on a surfboard while using a lightweight paddle to control movement and to aid the surfer to retain balance. It enables surfers to go out further onto the ocean than surfing on a board alone without a paddle. While it may sound interesting and has proven to be more kid-friendly, stand up paddle boarding requires getting used to stroke techniques, mastering balance and using the right gear.

For first time participants, while in Cape Town you can easily learn how to master stand up paddling with many organisations offering lessons and guided tours to ensure you learn this interesting type of surfing the right way.

Blokarting

blo-karting01This type of karting started in New Zealand, where a company known as Blokart International Ltd, builds blokarts and distributes them throughout the world. Described as a land yacht, a blokart is a 3-wheeled chassis that is controlled by a hand guided sail, via a steering bar, shaped like a steering wheel.

Because of their small size and high manoeuvrability, blokarts are perfect for using in small areas and on the street. Having been used to develop a sport, blokarts are also used to race professionally.

And since they can prove easy to learn, blokarting caters to old and young alike, and provides loads of fun. Blokart gear can be bought in Cape Town, and there are great spots for blokarting throughout the Cape. Get ready to race with the wind!

Crocodile Cage Diving

crocodile-cage-diving01You’ve heard of and may have tried shark cage diving, but have you tried crocodile cage diving? A crocodile has reputedly the strongest bite in the world, and may even match that of the late T. rex. That’s about 24 times the biting force of a human. While that may make you think twice about getting into the water with one of them, cage diving with crocodiles has lead to specialised cages being created that can withstand the biting force of a crocodile.

Do you want to know where you can try out crocodile cage diving? Something of a novelty in the world right now, this experience is only offered in the Western Cape, in the Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn. Do you have what it takes to be in the water with a 1000 kg crocodile? The only way to answer that question is to book a session!

Microlighting

microlightingDating back to the 1900s, microlighting has evolved considerably. Dubbed as the motorbike in the sky, microlights are light and affordable aircraft. With paragliding a popular attraction in Cape Town, it’s no surprise to find microlights among them as well. As implied by the name, microlights are small aircraft with light wing structures. Providing slow flight, they allow one to get breathtaking sights of all that the Cape is below.

Even if you are not an experienced pilot, you can still get a taste of the whole experience as a passenger, with microlights featuring seating for two. Strap yourself in and discover a blend of exhilaration and relaxation in the sky.

While you’re residing in and around Cape Town, make sure to try one of these activities to feel truly alive.
