Huguenot Memorial Museum

Western Cape, Cape Town , Franschhoek

Description

Situated in the truly magical valleys of the Western Cape’s oldest and most beloved wine vineyards, Huguenot Memorial Museum is overlooked by majestic mountains and offers amazing views. This wonderful museum portrays the history of the French Huguenots in Cape Colonial History, educating visitors on this important aspect of our county’s past. The French Huguenots were among the first while settlers to arrive in the Cape and the museum is also known as South Africa’s “French Corner”, displaying cultural traces and informative facts. Although this intense yet spellbinding history took place so many centuries ago (between 1688 and 1720), locals to the area and tourists in search of insight enjoy discovering the trails of this time. Some of this region’s best wine farms and landmarks are marked with strong French influence and the name “Franschhoek” itself literally means French Corner.

The museum houses an incredible collection of fine antiques and elegant furniture dating back to a time long ago, while the story of the Huguenot’s has also been documented here for all to embrace. Picturesque green lawns and a serene pool can also be discovered on the Museum grounds, as well as an enchanting wildflower garden where picnics can be enjoyed, while the restaurant is also a great spot to stop for a lunch with friends during the outing. Although this museum is largely focused on the historical French influences of the past, other items that relate to the Khoisan population in this region at the time can also be found, as well as other things to enjoy, such as beautiful monuments and structures. The Franschhoek area is also popular for its many fynbos plants, which are also found; right here on the museum grounds, on display for all guests to enjoy. Make a turn at the Museum shop and possibly find something special to take home in memory of your time here. Great admission fees allow the Huguenot Memorial Museum to continually welcome visitors – opening hours are from 9 am to 7 pm Mondays to Saturdays, and from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sundays.
