About District Six Museum

Established in December of 1994, the District Six Museum is a collaboration of memories and a recollection of hardships felt by a community, and stands as a memorial to the forced movement and marginalisation of 60 000 inhabitants of various races during South Africa's Apartheid years. There was a need to establish truths and look deeper at the District Six experience, where social justice would be advocated and addressed. The Museum provides visitors with insight into the history of this now infamous area, and is often visited by former residents. The District Six Museum is a place of reflection and educational understanding, and aims to bring together a positive community where people of all races can co-exist through dignity. The museum is dedicated to the construction of houses and environmental planning in the area, and also aims to get the public actively involved in community projects that involve arts, music and literature. When visiting, you will find the difficult journey mapped out in front of you, through a collection of old photos, paintings and artefacts from this time - many of these were actually donated by former residents. Open from 9 AM to 4 PM every Monday to Saturday, the museum is visited by tour groups, schools and also by small groups of locals and tourists who are interested in learning about the history of this area.
