About Estcourt
Estcourt, a sizeable hamlet located in the valley below Van Reenen's Pass and in the Anglo-Boer War region, along with Winterton, located 40km to the north, serve as the entryways to the central Drakensberg. Estcourt was called in honour of Thomas Estcourt, an English MP who encouraged the immigration of immigrants to the region. It was originally known as Bushman's River because of its proximity to water. Apart from its apparent Anglo-Boer War ties, Estcourt is well-known for being close to the Thukela Biosphere, a valley bushveld area with around 100,000 hectares that is home to a variety of species and the Weenan Game Reserve, a KwaZulu Natal conservation park.
