About De Kelders
De Kelders, a little village only 5km north of Gansbaai and about 25 minutes drive from Hermanus, has mostly escaped the large-scale tourism that has engulfed this region of the country and continues to function primarily as a fishing community known for its seafood. De Kelders is located on the shores of Walker Bay, which is known as the breeding ground of the Southern Right Whale. The whales come to these protected bays and rocky inlets every year between July and November to mate and give birth to their calves. The main draw of De Kelders is some of the best-land whale viewing in the world. Whales frequently come within a few meters of the rocks that line the edges of kelp beds along the De Kelders shoreline, never failing to delight. Some of the earliest remains of modern man were discovered in the Klipgat Cave, a short distance up the coast from De Kelders and outside the Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
