Cango Caves

Western Cape, Oudtshoorn, Oudtshoorn

Description

The Cango Caves are a world-famous attraction of Oudtshoorn, around 30 kilometres beyond the town. These caves are most likely the main reason you decided to book a holiday in the town of Oudtshoorn. Here, you can discover some of the world's largest stalagmite formations set in Precambrian limestone, which is from a period around 4500 million years ago.

As you enter the Cango Caves, you will definitely experience the temptation to explore the many tunnels and chambers that extend for over 4 kilometres. However, only a quarter is available to the public for exploration. There are two types of tours you can choose from here. The Heritage Tour, which is essentially the standard tour, involves experienced and accredited guides who take you for an hour's exploration of the caves where you can view the various rock formations, with unique names like 'the bridal couple', 'weird cango candle', 'the hanging shawl' and 'glass flower fantasy'. If you want to explore more of the caves, there is the Adventure Tour, where the guides take you past the end of the standard tour. This tour will prove to be more difficult as you go, with ladders, steps and a limited amount of space. Clearly not for the faint of heart!

Since the tours can only accommodate a limited number of visitors, you will need to book these tours in advance. Treat yourself to one of the most exotic highlights of the Klein Karoo at the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn.
